nadal hassan made some brief statements that lasted about a minute or so. it will be interesting to see if nadal hasan says anything. obviously, presumably, this will move on to the punishment phase after this jury finds him guilty. that dan hasan has already admitted to being the shooter. the question is for this jury to go over the instructions and the sheet they will have to determine exactly which charges he would be convicted of. obviously assuming that at this point he will be convicted. that's what the judge in this case has been going over throughout most of the morning is a long, complex sheet the jury must go over to determine exactly what charges he'll be convicted of. >> so curious, 13 of his military peers, as well, here, and if he doesn't get to say what he wants to say now in closing i bet you in any kind of potential sentencing phase he could do exactly what he wants to say and that is make me a martyr, which most people believe he wants to do in this slow road to judicial suicide, as tojeffrey toobin puts it. back to president obama. >> --

they want off the case because they say hassan himself wants to be executed. ed lavandera covering the court-martial in texas for us. ed, what is the very latest on this? >> good morning. we are waiting for court procedure proceedings to bedwgin this morning. this is after everything was dramatically shut down in the courtroom yesterday after the three attorneys that are essentially standing by major hassan's side, he is acting as his own attorney, but the military has invited three attorneys that help him guide through any legal procedural issues. they are not actually speaking in the courtroom because hasan has been doing it. those three attorneys started voicing concerns. hasan is trying to help the prosecution to ensure that he gets the death penalty and those attorneys don't feel like they can stand by and watch that happen. as soon as the attorney said that the judge shut everything down and put into private meetings that we haven't heard anything else as to anything else is going to happen. we are eagerly anticipating and the court is beginning this mor
